I was recently interviewed by Chris Bentzen of Hot Art Wet City in Vancouver BC.

In this video you can hear me talk about the turning point that I find while creating a painting and also chatting about creativity in general. I compare deep creativity to the act of climbing into a deep well and how it can be tempting to try to reach for a life-line in the form of an outside opinion. Overtime I have learned that it can be really rewarding to "stick with it" instead of stepping away from the work and that this process can really boost your confidence in making creative decisions throughout future creativity. Sometimes involving another opinion can be confusing or lead me away from what I truly want to do with my work.

I like the well metaphor as it reminds me of one of my favourite novels by Murakami where the main character climbs down into a well everyday in a sort of ritualistic way. The book is called "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle".

“The point is, not to resist the flow. You go up when you're supposed to go up and down when you're supposed to go down. When you're supposed to go up, find the highest tower and climb to the top. When you're supposed to go down, find the deepest well and go down to the bottom. When there's no flow, stay still. If you resist the flow, everything dries up. If everything dries up, the world is darkness.”

Cameras can be a bit intimidating but thankfully Chris (pictured above) made me feel very comfortable and asked some great questions. I was really excited to talk about my ideas and so honoured to be given the opportunity.
