Originally from Bangkok, Thailand, Korakrit Arunanondchai creates multidisciplinary work, often incorporating fashion, painting and video installations all at the same time. The young artist currently works out of a studio in New York.

In the above photo, Arunanondchai’s studio appears small and simple. The works on the wall may be some of the artist’s “denim paintings” – that is, sheets of denim that are treated with splashes of bleach, and even burned in spots. I wonder if Arunanondchai works with fire within this small studio space, or if he takes the work outside or to another facility for that purpose.

On one side of the room is a small table and a chair, while cardboard cylinders and rolls of paper are stuffed into seemingly every corner. This space looks like it might be a division of a larger room, though it’s uncertain whether Arunanondchai’s studio space is larger, or if he shares it with others.

The whole setup seems to have a rather informal feel to it, and reminds me a lot of shared studio spaces found in universities. Given that the artist is in his late 20’s as of this writing, this style of studio seems fitting. I like the way the artist has these works simply tacked up on the wall, and is probably working on several of them at the same time. There’s a feeling of wild experimentation – maybe some of these pieces will end up being discarded or serve as studies for a final one.

Arunanondchai is known for works that encouraging a participatory atmosphere. He also frequently collaborates with other artist, designers and even musicians. I imagine that the studio space pictured here would frequently be host to guests brainstorming a new artwork.
