Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Samara Golden has lived throughout the United States, and currently lives in Los Angeles, California, where she works in a studio space in the artistic neighbourhood of Boyle Heights. The artist is known for room installation works that address isolation and long-distance communication.

Golden’s studio looks packed, and softly lit in this photo. It has the home-studio aesthetic of lamp light, large spots of incandescent light pooling in certain spaces and creating dark shadows elsewhere.  The artist herself, in the photo, is hard at work creating a foam-based art construction in the center of the space – a sofa made as part of a recent art installation that consisted of numerous small rooms.

Golden seems to be at work by herself. The artist sitting on floor, using bare hands to construct her work lends the whole image an atmosphere of the handmade, of a comfortable, home-like studio space. This isn’t a warehouse with hundreds of assistants.

In the background behind the artist, tons of extra supplies are visible –and stacked together seemingly without rhyme or reason. There’s strips of foam and paper, cardboard boxes, tables, chairs, and buckets of paint or plaster. Looks like quite the selection of materials.

Samara Golden’s works have been shown in solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and CANADA gallery in New York. She has participated in numerous group shows, as well, and continues to produce new works.
