Chloé Surprenant's Mixed Media Art Portfolio
Chloé Surprenant is an artist who lives and works in Montréal and Amsterdam. Chloé’s artworks consist of layered mixed media compositions that explore themes of the “other” – the differences, and hidden similarities, between human experiences and feelings.
I enjoy the overall aesthetic that Chloé has built up in her portfolio. The works currently available on her art portfolio website span almost two decades, and it’s interesting to see how the artist’s practice has evolved in that period of time. Chloé’s most recent works, in her 2018 gallery, feature obscured figures that are at once distinctly recognizable and totally anonymous. The artist’s interventions obscure most of the faces, but seem almost like natural phenomena – collected dust, smudges or scrapes on old photographs.
Chloé’s works tend to have a heavy, slightly dark atmosphere to them – perhaps the artist is playing up a sense of fear surrounding the unknown, or the “other.”
