Balance and Harmony: The Art Portfolio of Matt Kantor
Dutch Tulip Abstract, oil and acrylic
Matt Kantor was born in Key West, Florida, and grew up in Texas. In his practice, Matt seeks to capture a sense of balance and harmony. He works in a range of media including graphite, charcoal, and oil paint, and often used flowers as a motif.
With Matt’s consistent use of floral subject matter, it’s easy to observe the subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways in which his style changes to accommodate different media. I’m enjoying browsing through Matt’s oil painting gallery, in which the artist seems to approach colour and volume with more abandon than he does in, for example, his graphite gallery. The paintings in Matt’s portfolio tend to be saturated, and utilize large plains of pure colour, lending them a satisfying, almost pop-art-esque aesthetic.

In drawing medium like graphite and charcoal, Matt focuses more on fine details and shading, often incorporating negative space into his compositions. The works in his conte gallery are often mono or dichromatic, lending them a subtle, but clear impact in the expanse of the picture plane.
