Painter Anne Popperwell creates beautifully soft, creamy, dreamy paintings featuring landscapes and other natural subject matter. The artist is currently based in the Gulf Islands off the coast of British Columbia, and many of her works express scenes from in and around the islands.

I really enjoy the colour palette that Anne employs in many of her artworks. The artist’s series of small works, currently available on her portfolio website, showcase the artist’s ability to create an entire scene and mood out of a very simple, subdued composition. In this series, the artist’s compositions tend to focus on a dark horizon line, with built-up shapes that could be distant mountains, hills, or islands. Around these horizon lines, the artist layers soft hues of orange, purple, and blue to create a gradient effect like the setting sun reflecting off a still ocean.

Anne’s cloud-focused paintings are equally soft and creamy, with the shapes of cloud forms rendered in brush marks that one can almost feel.
