Layered Narrative: The Art Portfolio of Laurey Foulkes

An illustration of two strange creaturesUntitled

Laurey Foulkes was born into an artistic family and began studying art at an early age. In her current practice, the artist creates deeply layered narrative illustrations that invite close inspection and imaginative viewings.

I really enjoy the dark, saturated colour palettes that Laurey tends to use in her works, particularly in her painting and mixed media gallery. The works in this gallery tend to feature figures -- human, animal, and otherwise -- interacting in spaces and environments that are both familiar and dreamlike; slightly off-kilter in a way that evokes a space somewhere between reality and fantasy.

As we saw in our previous feature of Laurey’s intriguingly hermetic illustrations, the content of these illustrations leans into dark, sometimes macabre subject matter, yet never becomes so overt so as to keep the viewer from forming their own ideas or narratives to match the imagery. I look forward to seeing more of what Laurey has been working on in recent years!
