Saskatchewan Wildlife: The Art of Belinda Harrow

Belinda Harrow is a Saskatchewan-based artist who works in a variety of media, from sculpture to painting. The artist’s works often incorporate Saskatchewan wildlife as subject and motif.
I’m really enjoying browsing the images of Belinda’s recent project The 11th Avenue Gophers, a pop-up exhibition in downtown Regina. The project consists of a group of gophers, each composed of cast cement with a pillowy shape adorned with detailed drawings of either side of the gopher. The gophers, each given a name, were arranged in a group in the window of a downtown commercial space. The effect is one that combines raw, natural aesthetics with the hard edges of modern architecture while making a poignant statement about the destruction of animal habitats.
As we saw in our previous feature of Belinda’s artwork, she used rabbits as a motif in a similar construction as these gophers in a prior exhibition entitled Future Nostalgic -- The Rabbits.
