Emotional and Exuberant: The Art Portfolio of Susan Harmon
Susan Harmon is an abstract expressionist painter who works with with accounts of trauma and hope, forming colourful, gestural compositions -- often on raw, unstretched canvas. The artist’s works are both emotional and exuberant, introspective and extroverted.
Throughout her practice, Susan takes an artistic approach that’s informed and inspired by both her own experiences and the experiences of others, filtered through literature and second-hand accounts. The artist’s style is inspired by the likes of Jackson Pollock and Cy Twombly, though she often take a slightly more holistic, mediated approach. I like the way the titles of Susan’s artworks give the viewer a hint as to the context or ideas behind an image.

Susan blends texture and colour with an expert hand, often blurring the line between the two -- in some paintings, darker drips of pigment fall across flat planes of colour, giving the illusion of volume and shadow. In others, paint is applied in three-dimensional blobs for a similar yet wholly different effect.
