A Wintry Mood: Landscape Painting by Aimee Rudge
Padilla Bay, acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas
Aimee Rudge is a painter who specializes in quiet, subdued seaside landscapes. Working mainly in acrylic paints and watercolours, Aimee captures the desolate, slightly cold beauty of Washington beaches and oceans under overcast skies, with a wintry mood.

I really appreciate the level of detail that Aimee tends to work with in her paintings. There’s enough here to give the viewer a strong impression of the overall scene -- looking at these images, I can almost feel the wind off the ocean, and smell the salt in the air. Aimee’s watercolour paintings take the impressionistic edge a step further, with the artist rendering scenes in sparing marks, emphasizing negative space and the translucence of the medium itself.

The texture that Aimee achieves in her acrylic paintings is a great blend of soft-focused, almost pastel-like blending and daubed-on paint marks. Mossy rocks, trees, and sandy beaches are all given similar treatment, and using refined yet wide colour palettes Aimee creates convincing imagery of each.
