Today let’s look at featured artist John Brickels and his intricate stoneware works. John uses both slab and extruded stoneware clay to produce his works which range from small-scale, stylized replicas of buildings, to complex car parts mounted into the gutted bodies of real automobiles.

I’m a big fan of John’s robot sculptures, life-sized clay sculptures made to look like the robots of classic science fiction, often embellished with found objects and furniture. These aren’t merely sculptures of robotic forms, but rather individuals that each take on a personality and appear to be conducting everyday tasks, like cooking, cleaning, and styling their hair. John’s craftsmanship in each of these works is stunning, with the details neatly formed and not an unintentional lump or dent in sight.

It’s this attention to detail that makes his car parts so interesting as well, and as he often uses car bodies that are rusted and in disrepair, the clay seems to shine as a remnant of past glories.
