Intuitive Mixed Media: Art by Karen Rovner

An abstract painting featuring a series of black and grey cubesAfter the election, 2016, oil on canvas

Based in North Andover, Massachusetts, Karen Rovner is a painter who creates abstract artworks with an intuitive mixed media process. The resulting works often have a vaguely Cubist aesthetic, with loose geometric forms floating in a wash of subdued color.

As Karen says about her own works, she often begins the painting process abstractly, without a clear image or subject in mind. The works, then, become images on their own, suggesting objects and scenes that become recognizable when paired with titles. I enjoy this type of abstraction, and the way that it seems to depict a concrete subject while allowing the viewer plenty of room for interpretation.

It’s also great to see so much variation in terms of style in the artist’s portfolio. Some works create patterns of geometric marks, while others are wild collections of overlapping lines and planes. Karen was mentored by fellow painter Nella Lush and is a member of the National Association of Women Artists (N.A.W.A.)
