People and Places: Art by Beverly Parson White

Texas-based artist Beverly Parson White works in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, and pencil. The artist’s works often feature the people and places of the southern states as subject matter, with the artist taking a slightly stylized, painterly approach.
I really enjoy Beverly’s paintings of cow, horses and other local domestic animals – sometimes using brighter-than-life colors like purples and yellows, the artist renders her subjects in thick and heavy outlines, with a focus on the central figures. The resulting paintings have great impact. These remind me of Lesli Devito’s dog paintings, wherein the artist takes an iconographic central figure and renders it on a monochrome background.

In Beverly’s portrait works, the artist’s hand takes a sketched, painterly style, leaving plenty of evidence of the artist’s intervention and involvement in the image. Each stroke of color is visible and seems to have a life of its own, lending an animated feeling to the overall image.
