Impressionist Hand: An Art Portfolio by Karen Dale

A painting of some pink flowersUntitled

Karen Dale lives and works in Long Island, New York. The artist works in watercolour, ink, acrylic, and more, creating artworks that often feature floral forms, with bright colours and a loose, impressionist hand.

I enjoy the artist’s use of apparent combinations of media in some of her works. In some floral pieces, for example, it looks as though Karen uses acrylic paint to create spindly, hard-edged stems, then pools of diffuse watercolour or ink pigment to form the petals and blossoms. It’s an approach that reminds me of a similar aesthetic in the felted works of Karen Wyeth.

Karen Dale also has a series of pen and ink artworks in her portfolio -- GeoCities. These drawings also sometimes adopt floral motifs, though they have an interesting architectural edge that stands in contrast to the other works in the artist’s portfolio. These works emphasize dense pattern and hand-drawn texture over colour.
