Gaetane Cummings has been an avid painter since 1998, creating figurative abstract images inspired by Chinese calligraphy techniques. The artist’s paintings use a fascinating combination of abstract brush marks and detailed elements to build human figures out of raw paint and texture.
There’s something very striking about the imagery in Gaetane’s portfolio. The artist’s works are imbued with a sense of some unnameable emotion, something that could probably be interpreted very differently by any given viewer. There’s a deep sense of ambiguity, both in the loose, unfinished elements of each image and in the displaced but detailed eyes and facial features that often accompany those elements.

It’s in Gaetane’s use of negative space where the inspiration of traditional Chinese painting forms becomes particularly apparent. Though they may use a wide range of colours and loose, dramatic brush marks, each of these works feels quiet, subdued, and self-contained. It’s up to the viewer to draw out the power in each painting.
