David Grenier is a food stylist with a background in fine art and over two decades of experience in the culinary industry. In his current practice, David produces beautifully composed images of savoury foods, sweets, and drinks that balance high-definition detail with careful staging.

I really like the artist’s treatment of colour in his series book 5. The food photos here are rich with earth tones and the deep, jewel-like hues of ripe fruits and vegetables. There’s something romantic about the imagery in this book, and the way that David includes not only the stunningly plated dishes themselves, but hints of rustic table settings and furniture that give the viewer a more whole impression of the scene surrounding the meal. The balance between bright, fresh colours and deeper, darker tones lends each image a lifelike aura.

In previous series, David showcases his skill with using different lighting and colour schemes to express different atmospheres and seasons — brightly coloured drinks on a crisp white background feel summery, while cuts of meat and cooked vegetables have an autumnal flair.
