The Abstract Painting Portfolio of Skai Fowler
Jumping to Conclusions, acrylic and gold leaf on canvas
Skai Fowler is a vancouver-based visual artist who works primarily in abstract painting, creating artworks that emphasize rich, warm colours and brush work that is at once exuberant and controlled. The artist’s recent paintings combine geometric planes of colour with sweeping, splashy overlaid brush strokes.
Now We Dream, acrylic, gold, and silver leaf on canvas
I really enjoy the way the artist delves into different abstract aesthetics while maintaining a cohesive overall look for her portfolio. Each series that the artist produces seems to build on the ideas of a previous one. In Love Poems to the Soul, for example, narrow, sketchy black lines sit on the surface of paintings, adding a kind of hand-drawn aesthetic that hearkens to the splatter paintings of Jackson Pollock. In Stumble Into Life, Skai adopts a similar method of layering frantic brush marks over more methodical planes of abstract colour, but forgoes pure, sleek black in favour of thicker colourful brush marks.
It’s also interesting to browse through the artist’s archive and find elements of the artist’s current aesthetics developing in earlier paintings.
