Timothy J. Sullivan is a self-taught artist who works in a subtractive method -- that is, he applies thick layers of pigment to a canvas or other substrate, then removes them strategically, scraping away media to reveal new and interesting abstract visuals.
It’s really interesting to look through Timothy’s art portfolio and see the myriad ways that his artistic technique can come to fruition. No two works are exactly alike, and the stylistic consistencies serve to better emphasize the unique imperfections and happy accidents that arise from letting the media work together naturally.
The artist’s works from 2018-2019 represent a departure from the purely subtractive methodology of some previous works. In the newer works, Timothy has experimented with splashing lines and thin strips of pigment only various “canvases” in a method reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, with a sense of energy that’s immediate, rather than reserved.
