A painting with a surreal composition made up of paper airplanes and wood pillarsThe Greys, oil on canvas

Ronald George Straight is an artist originally from Winnipeg, who has lived in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and BC. In his paintings, Ronald captures the colour and scale of the prairie landscape, including wildlife and slice-of-life details.

I really enjoy the way Ronald employs colour in his oil on canvas works. Looking at the artist’s portfolio as a whole, it seems that orange and reddish tones rise to the surface as the most prominent hues, leading to an overall sense of warmth and richness in the paintings. Works like Saskatchewan Sunset and The Drifter conjure imagery of the old west, with equine figures positioned before blazing sunsets on distant horizons.

The artist demonstrates great skill with the oil paint medium -- the works have a great balance between gestural colour layering and smooth blending, with moments of photo-realistic detail juxtaposed against backgrounds that embrace free abstraction and pure colour.
